One of my very favorite things to do with artists is to have lunch. There is something truly wonderful about sitting down in a restaurant with a cup of coffee. Enjoying a good sandwich and having an interesting conversation with an artist make it even more special. When I have lunch with a theatre maker, I often feel like we have known each other forever.
Today, I had lunch with a former student – or rather, recent graduate of FSU’s school of theatre, Griffin. Again, I found myself enjoying lunch with an artist. I was lucky enough to hear about his upcoming plans. We caught up with each other since the summer camp we worked at ended. I learned about his family and told him stories of mine. Sitting at a lunch table in a wonderfully small restaurant, I felt that old sense of belonging. I also felt pride deep in my soul that I have had the pleasure of teaching such a wonderful human.
Teaching theatre to college students is really quite wonderful. To see them become working artists…now that’s the stuff dreams are made of. I am excited for the next time I catch up with him (and his roommate) over lunch. I can’t wait to laugh with them while learning of the shenanigans they get into next.
As for me, I am going to Munich, Germany next week. I am excited to visit beer halls and cafes that have served as a gathering place for artists…a place where community is made. We are also going to the Salzburg festival where we will be immersed in arts! I mean, I will also be doing research, but the cafe/bar culture…that’s the dream…
If you have never had lunch with a theatre maker, you are missing out. I highly suggest you try it.
